Our Mission

The Keystone College Juvenile Justice Institute is dedicated to improving the lives of youth and families through development and implementation of evidence-based, trauma-responsive programs designed to strengthen communities and promote peaceful conflict resolution, toward the goal of reducing juvenile crime, avoiding incarceration, and enhancing community adjustment.

Program Components

  • Trauma-informed/trauma-responsive practices:
    Recognizing the widespread experience of trauma and toxic stress, and providing children/youth with tools to effectively cope with those experiences
  • Restorative practices:
  • Establishing a foundation for healthy communities by improving and repairing interpersonal relationships

Specific Programming Elements

  • Assist students in “trauma-release” processes (dancing, rhythm/clapping games, etc.)
  • Assist students in “self-regulation” processes (guided meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, etc.)
  • Restorative practices (circle discussions – identifying emotions, identifying physical sensations, problem solving, social skills, etc.)
  • Student mentoring (homework help, projects, individual connection)

  • Trauma-Informed Restorative Practices in School (comprehensive program under
    development):
    Consult with school personnel for specific needs
    Observe for specific needs
    Training for school personnel
